The National Cyber Security Operations Centre (NCOC) is to be launched this month, named as the digital month by the Ministry of Digital Economy, and will onboard 37 critical state institutions for monitoring cybersecurity threats, top officials said.

The NCOC, established with the support of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and the Ministry of Digital Economy, plays a pivotal role in this initiative, operating, 24/7, providing monitoring, threat detection, and rapid response to cyber incidents, which is a paramount need when introducing digital services, an digital public infrastructure, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne said. It will be formally introduced to the state institutions, he added.

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team Officials said that it will initially be introduced in 37 critical state institutions and will issue early warnings regarding malware and unauthorised access, enabling institutions to mitigate risks and respond effectively to potential breaches, he added. They said the Department of Immigration, the Department of Registration of Persons, digital infrastructure maintenance institutions such as the ICTA, the government cloud, etc, will be monitored by the NCOC. It is intended to offer the services to all key government organisations via the proposed NCSOC. Moreover, critical private businesses such as the financial sector and the telecommunications sector will also be key stakeholders of this national initiative.

They also noted the government’s efforts to intensify its digitalisation efforts through a 100-day programme, focusing on enhancing online services, streamlining payment systems, and promoting digital literacy.
