Aahil, Mayooran, Ashlin win U-16 titles
Aahil Kaleel won the Boy’s U-16 Singles title
Aahil Kaleel secured the Singles title while the pairing of Mayooram Kugbheran and Ashlin de Silva culminated with an easy Doubles title in the Boys’ Under-16 category at the two finals of 111th National Tennis Championship worked off at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts yesterday. The two finals, the Boys Under-16 Singles and Doubles events, were played on the penultimate day of the 111th Tennis Nationals, in addition to the semi-finals of a few other important segments.
Aahil Kaleel emerged the Boy’s Under-16 Singles champion, but he was made to work hard for it by his opponent Saha Kapilasena, who pushed the final to a three-setter thriller. After levelling one-all by the second set following Saha’s epic comeback, Aahil resisted and made a strong return to seal the title with a win of 2-1.
The Boys’ Under-16 Doubles final was a rather contrasting affair as Mayooram Kugbheran and Ashlin de Silva pulled off an easy straight win against Naqeeb Hussain and Ashwin Denver, who were left cluless.
In the two semi-finals of the Girl’s Under-16 Singles, Venuli Jayasinghe and Yuhansa Peiris booked the two berths of the final under opposing circumstances. Venuli led the first set in the first semi-final against Githmi Fernando, who opted to retire and concede the important clash, while Yuhansa Peiris recorded an easy straight win against Sandithi Usgodaarachchi in the other semi-final.
In addition to the final of the Girl’s Under-16 Singles, the all-important finals of the Men’s and Women’s Open will be played today as the 111th National Tennis Championship comes to an end.
