Trade Ministry refuses to divulge details of tariff talks
View(s):The Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development on Thursday rejected a request for information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act filed by a Sunday Times reporter seeking information on the recent US tariff discussions.
A request for information was filed asking the following details: “What are the concessions and tax benefits offered by Sri Lanka to the United States in the recent negotiations between Sri Lanka and the US to reduce US tariffs on Sri Lanka’s exports to the US?”
The Ministry said the requested information was ‘exempted’ under Section 5 (1) of the Act. “As per Section 5 (1)(b)(ii) and 5 (1)(c)(v) of the Right to Information Act No. 12 of 2016, disclosure of information would adversely affect the ongoing negotiations between Parties, and the entering into trade agreements, respectively,” the Ministry said in a response.
On August 1, US authorities announced a reduced tax of 20 per cent on Sri Lankan goods to the US.
