Uva rampaged by forest and brush fires- and arsonists
View(s):With the current onset of the extremely dry climate conditions in the Uva Province, the burning of mountains, protected forests, and grasslands in the province has begun to increase significantly.
The Disaster Management Centre says that especially with the dry climate, there are unscrupulous persons who hunt wild animals in the forest reserves while there are also arsonists at work.
It has become a common sight to see a mountain range or forest reserve on fire in Uva Province almost every evening as darkness falls.
With the current dry weather conditions, nearly one hundred acres have been completely destroyed in these fires in just a few days, and Police officers were able to arrest several people who started the fires.

Uva rampaged by forest and brush fires- and arsonists
In the past few days, several forest and brush fires occurred in the Ella tourist area, including a cottage at the Ella Kandakumbura tourist hotel that was completely destroyed by fire.
Tourists in the Ella area were also saddened by the destruction to the environment by the fires, and there were even instances where tourists assisted the Police and officers of the Forest Conservation Department in extinguishing these fires.
The areas affected by fires include the Nine Arches Bridge area, Kandakumbura, Demodara Mountain, Dowa Paraiyangala Mountain, Victoria Randenigala Rantambe Reserve, Welimada Ratkarawwa Mountain, Liyangahawela Mapitiya Mountain, Haldummulla Walhaputhenna Ginigathgala Reserve, Badulla Eladaluwa Mountain, Higurugamuwa Reserve near Uvawellassa University, Walasbedda Mountain, etc, Haputale Forest Officer W M Dilipa Chathuranga Sirisena said.
These fires that occur on the mountain slopes sometimes last for as long as two days, and since it is difficult to transport water bowsers and fire brigade vehicles to those places, officers of the Forest Conservation Department, officers of the 112 Infantry Brigade Army Camp in Badulla, officers of the Diyatalawa Army Camp, and Police officers work together to extinguish the fire using rakes, leaves, and fire ropes, Mr. Sirisena said.
