Sri Lankan journalists on a visit to China have learned how advanced tech such as Artificial Intelligence, virtual reality, and satellites can be used for their work.
In a 15-day media tour arranged by the Chinese government, the Sunday Times observed how advanced technology could be introduced to Sri Lanka’s media and improve journalism practices.
There were visits to tech companies, media technology companies as well as Museum of Communication University of China, by visiting Beijing and Hefei. In a classroom setting, how technological advancements are applied in journalism was explained.

The Sunday Times observed how satellite technology was used for news production, the use of remote satellites were helpful to monitor a disaster situation, analyse information as well as obtain footage of areas which are inaccessible.
This technology could be integrated by Sri Lankan digital as well as print media journalists, who cover environment and agricultural news by obtaining footage, and weather data.
Apart from that, satellite technology could be used to reach remote and inaccessible areas. It could also be used for surveillance during crises such as natural disasters, protests, and situations where it is risky to send reporters to certain areas. It reduces risks and could trim travel expenditure as well as other costs of sending a team of reporters.
The use of satellite remote sensing could also provide space-based perspective, extend human vision, overcomes temporal-spatial constraints in news material acquisition as well as features objectivity and credibility.
However, even though these advancements have also improved accessibility of news and reduced the risk factors, there were also drawbacks of using satellite remote sensing as it would make journalists more dependent on technology.
Use of such technology also would change the media dynamic of reporters reaching the scene of the incident to directly report. This would also deprive the reporters opportunity to observe minute details on site, and depend on satellite generated images.
China also incorporated artificial intelligence generated content in the media. AI is used to generate pictures, videos, analyse and gather information, improve quality of text as well as create audio.
Associate Senior Editor of Xinhua News Agency Dong Shuo explained how news gathering and editing in the era of media convergence. He explained how AI could be used to improve the quality of content.
The Sunday Times also learned that the AI technology can be used in Sri Lanka’s print media, where data analysis, and gathering of information could be done through AI. This could improve time management in news writing as well as improve the capability of presenting the information.
Apart from that, the same technology could be used for content planning and to generate creative ideas. Investigative journalists too, could make use of AI to carry out assistive investigative research.
Xinhua News Agency engineer, Wang Yihan explained how AI is used for generating imagery as well as video creation and how it could be applied to media.
Apart from that, the Sunday Times also learned how China used 5G “Fifth Generation wireless cellular technology” for media activities in China, and made observations how China had even reached beyond 5G technology and used 5G A “ 5G Advanced” technology.
The 5G advanced offers faster data speeds, reduced delays in data transmission, energy efficiency, and supported advanced applications such as XR technology, and AI.
It was also demonstrated how 5G and AI were used to show how a host who was presenting in a Beijing studio, appears in a virtual scene on a street in Hong Kong.
