For the first time in the judicial history of the country, public assistance has been sought to identify artifacts found at the Chemmani mass grave site, in Jaffna where at least 112 human skeletons were recovered along with several objects.

Based on the motion moved by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Jaffna Magistrate court, the Jaffna Magistrate A. A. Aanatharajah issued a directive on Friday to display artifacts found during excavation in public for identification to pursue further investigations.

Accordingly, artifacts such as a school bag, bangles, a feeding bottle suspected to have belonged to infants are among several items that will be displayed onTuesday from 1.30 pm to 5 pm at the Ariyalai Siththupath Hindu cemetery, along the A 9 road.

The second stage of excavation activities have been underway under the judicial orders at two sites declared as ‘Site -1’ and ‘Site -2’ for the past 27 days. Excavations were carried out by teams led by Prof Raj Somadeva and Judicial Medical Officer S. Piranavan.

With the directive of the Magistrate Court, moves are also underway to use scanners to verify whether more human remains are buried underneath in the adjacent lands next week.
