Chairperson vacancy violates fundamental rights: Activists
View(s):Alleging a violation of fundamental rights, members of the Young Journalist Foundation and Deyata Saviya organisation have filed a case in the Supreme Court against the prolonged delay in appointing the chairperson of the Right to Information Commission.
The petition, filed on July 29, points to the president’s failure to make the appointment for nearly six months. The petitioners claim that this delay has infringed on the public’s fundamental right to access information, as guaranteed under the RTI Act.
Attorney-at-Law Isuru Mahesh Panditha, acting on the advice of Attorney-at-Law Amanda Kalpashaka, is appearing for the petitioners.
