Cost of Democracy: Are We Paying Too Much for Too Little?
Election after election, promise after promise but what have we really gained? Sri Lanka continues to cycle through elections local, provincial, parliamentary, and presidential each costing billions of taxpayer rupees. In return, we elect politicians who offer little more than empty rhetoric, personal enrichment, and political theatrics.
Instead of leaders who uplift the nation, we’re stuck funding layers of bureaucracy and political showmanship. Precious public funds that could transform our communities, support our most vulnerable, and build national infrastructure are wasted on a political machine that serves itself first.
Since independence in 1948, the people of this country have been repeatedly let down. We’ve been promised prosperity, but delivered mismanagement. We’ve been asked for patience, only to be betrayed. How long can this continue? The truth is harsh but necessary: our governance systems are broken.
What have decades of Political Rule delivered?
- Bloated Provincial Administrations – Expensive, inefficient, and disconnected from the people’s real needs.
- Dysfunctional Local Governments – Unable to manage even basic public services.
- An Obsolete Public Service – Red tape, outdated processes, and widespread inefficiency.
- Corrupt, Ineffective Policing – A justice system eroded by political interference.
- Crumbling Public Transport – Politicised, underfunded, and unreliable.
- A Broken Education System – Relying on outdated exams rather than real-world skills.
- Failing Healthcare and Sanitation – With public hospitals and facilities in poor condition.
- Environmental Neglect – Floods, pollution, and construction chaos due to lack of planning.
- Sky-High Cost of Living – Driven by wasteful public spending and poor taxation policies.
- Shortages of Essentials – From food to medicine, due to lack of strategic planning.
- Incompetent Leadership – Unqualified individuals appointed through political loyalty, not merit.
- Manual, Costly Elections – Billions spent with no move toward modern, digital systems.
- Underutilised Public Assets – Buildings, vehicles, and land wasting away without purpose.
- Sluggish Courts and Corrupt Judiciary – Justice delayed is justice denied.
And the list goes on. So, What Can Be Done?
We must demand accountability, transparency, and modern reforms. Citizens deserve a government that uses their hard-earned money wisely not one that fuels its own survival while people suffer.
We must break this cycle of apathy and political privilege and move toward a nation built on merit, efficiency, and public service not empty slogans and political dynasties.
Enough is enough. It’s time for the people to take back control not just at the ballot box, but through ongoing civic engagement, pressure for reform, and an unwavering demand for real progress.
