After three races of the ongoing Euroformula Open Championship 2025, Sri Lankan racing sensation Yevan Ranasinghe David leads the Drivers’ Championship standing with 163 points, a clear 18-point lead from South Korea and Team Motopark teammate Michael Shin, who sits at second with 145 points. After the season opener at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, Portugal, Yevan continued his heroics at the Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and at Hockenheimring in Germany to look forward with a fresh mind for the upcoming fourth instalment at Hungaroring in Hungary on July 5 and 6, as the 17-year-old anticipates to continue his powerful runs and tactical manoeuvers, with five more races to go before the completion of the season.

“It’s good to end the weekend like this, we just keep executing, and that’s the main thing as it’s a long season. It’s nice to end with the win, but we’re going to keep working,” Yevan said after pinning the third round with first place podium finish, following completing at 10th and third in the first two runs under challenging conditions.

Yevan took his fourth race win of the year following sensation start from P3 on the grid to lead from the first metres and set multiple race fastest laps in the third and final race of round three of Euroformula Open in Hockenheim on June 7 and 8. He built a five-season lead over his opposition and was unfazed by the appearance of rain or a safety car period which evaporated his advantage. He made good at the restart to take the chequered flag by just under a second from his nearest rival. David set fastest laps in each of the June first weekend’s three races and left Hockenheim with an 18-point lead in the championship standings.

In his second outing at the historic Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on May 17 and 18, Yevan fought for a splendid podium with a splendid second-place finish to end the second round of the Euroformula Open in the third race of the second round. This was after he earned a well-deserved podium finish in the first round and a fourth place in the second, before fighting his way back to complete with a second-place finish.

Yevan claimed his first pole position of the 2025 Euroformula Open season with a commanding performance in qualifying at the second round of the championship at the historic Spa Francorchamps circuit, setting the benchmark with his 2m 08.762s almost half a second ahead of his nearest rival.

“It was a really strong qualifying session where we took pole by quite a gap, which felt great. It was my first pole in Euroformula. It’s still early in the season, with plenty to look forward to. I’m just excited to get racing,” he said after the Belgium exploit.

Making his season debut, Yevan made a spectacular start to his Euroformula Open campaign with a top-six finish and consistent race pace across the season-opening weekend at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal on April 26 and 27. Airline carriers rejoiced at the sight of David leaving the Portuguese circuit, complete with six trophies having also taken the rookie win in all three races too.

Contesting his first full season in the ultra-competitive single-seater championship, David demonstrated racecraft, maturity and determination across the triple-header, where all drivers dice in identical Dallara 324 chassis powered by Tom’s engines.

“We actually had tricky start, but we dug deep and the team didn’t leave any stone unturned. We worked hard, and we came back with a podium finish. Then it was a double win. All this was through hard work so thank you so much to the team, to Sri Lanka and to everyone who has supported me so far.”

Yevan’s next venture will be on July 5 and 6 at the Hungaroring, Mogyoród in Hungary, which is the fourth round of the Euroformula Open 2025. Following that the season continues at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France on July 19 and 20, the Red Bull Ring in Austria on September 6 and 7, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain on September 20 and 21, before the season winds up at the Monza on October 18 and 19.

“It was a very interesting race at Hockenheim, especially with the races coming in. I had a five second gap but unfortunately we had a safety car, but with five laps left I got a good restart and held it to the end so that’s what’s important. Of course it’s a long season ahead, this was the third race weekend and there are five more to go, so anything can happen. Let’s hope for the best,” the gritty Sri Lankan youngster said with his focus set for a Hungary win.

In the Drivers’ Championship, Yevan leads the list with 163 points ahead of South Korea’s Michael Shin (145), Poland’s Tymek Kucharczyk (131), UK’s Edward Pearson (103) and Mexico’s Jose Gartias (99). In his nine outings at three venues, Yevan also leads the Rookeis’ Championship with a clear 88 points against USA’s Everett Stack. The Sri Lankan won eight out of the nine, besides the first round at Hockenheim, where he conceded his position to the American, who has raked in 58 points. With a clear 127 points, Yevan’s team, Motopark, leads the Team Championship against Nielsen Racing, now at second with 70 points and BVM Racing at third with 65 points.
