Sri Sumangala College, Kandy made history with a stunning 24-12 win over the more fancied Vidyartha College Kandy in their Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 clash at Pallekele yesterday. It was Sri Sumangala’s maiden win at this level — and they did it in style, scoring four well-crafted tries and sealing the game with grit and determination in the second half.

The first half, however, belonged to Vidyartha. Flanker Yashmitha Hiran opened the scoring for them in the 10th minute with a try, giving his side a slim 5-0 lead at halftime. But the real drama was yet to come.

Sri Sumangala roared back into the game after the break. Scrumhalf Adithya Ratnayake burst through the defence to score a try in the 44th minute, which he also converted himself to level the scores 7-5. Just five minutes later, No.8 Shashika Bandara charged over for an unconverted try to give Sumangala the lead.

Vidyartha replied through lock Mohamed Rashid’s converted try in the 56th minute, regaining a 12-10 lead. But Sri Sumangala weren’t done yet.

In the 60th minute, Bandara struck again — this time powering through for his second try, which was converted to swing the score back in Sumangala’s favour. Fullback Chamod Perera then capped the performance with a late try in the 68th minute to seal a memorable 24-12 win.
