Christina rule the pool with two meet records
Asian International School’s Christina Perumal stole the spotlight yesterday, breaking two meet records on the penultimate day of the 50th Milo All-Island Schools Aquatic Championship at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex in Colombo.
Christine produced a superb swim in the Girl’s Under-20 200m Breaststroke final, clocking 2 minutes 48.94 seconds, smashing the previous record of 2:53.01 held by Nawanjana Siriwardena of Lyceum International School, Wattala last year. She followed it up with another stunning performance in the 50m Breaststroke final, recording 36.21 seconds to erase Siriwardena’s 2024 mark of 37.04. Earlier in the preliminary round, Christina had also set a new record timing of 36.32 seconds.
Meanwhile, Zahira College’s M.F. Muhammad set up two of his own records in the Boys Under-18 Breaststroke events. He clocked 2 minutes 27.56 seconds in the 200m final, bettering his previous mark of 2:29.09. Muhammad then created history by swimming under 30 seconds in the 50m final, finishing in 29.95 seconds, beating his earlier record of 30.51.
Nischika Nanayakkara of Ladies’ College also impressed in the Girls Under-20 50m Breaststroke final, finishing second in 36.51 seconds, while Nawanjana Siriwardena claimed bronze with 36.98 seconds, both times faster than the previous record.
In the Boys Under-20 50m Breaststroke final, Tharuk Kekunawala of Ananda College broke a 12-year-old record with 31.04 seconds, while records also tumbled from Vinuka Dias in the Under-16 50m Breaststroke and Nic de Silva in the Under-20 50m Backstroke.
