A suspect has been arrested at Hatharaliyadda in the Kandy District for allegedly printing counterfeit currency, police said.
The arrest came after a hotel cashier grew suspicious of a Rs. 5,000 note he received from the suspect and alerted the police.
Police located the suspect in Hatharaliyadda town and found two forged Rs. 5,000 notes in his possession. A search of his residence revealed that he had been producing fake currency in various denominations.
Officers seized eight forged 5,000-rupee notes, four 500-rupee notes, six 100-rupee notes, and nine 50-rupee notes. They also recovered the computer and printer allegedly used in the operation.
Police said the suspect confessed to encashing the forged notes through a communications centre in the town. The communications centre owner is absconding.
Investigations are being led by Kandy Division Senior Superintendent Anurudda Bandaranayake and Hatharaliyadda Police Chief Inspector Sunil Nanayakkara.
