Mount Lavinia Magistrate A.D. Chathurika De Silva has ordered the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau (FIB) to record statements from Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe and newly elected Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal over a fraud case.

The case referred to allegations  where a building belonging to the trade union National Workers’  Institute had been leased out using fraudulent documents for Rs. 3.6 million by suspects claiming to be union officials.

The magistrate ordered the FIB to record Mr. Jayasinghe’s and Mr. Jayalal’s statements for her to give a ruling on a request made on behalf of the aggrieved party to name Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe as a suspect in the case. She also ordered the FIB to submit to the court the statement it had already obtained from Mr. Samarasinghe.

Orders were also issued to police to submit documents uncovered during the probe. They include the building’s deed and copies of legal judgements.

Maithri Gunaratne, PC, who appeared for the aggrieved party, requested the court to name Minister Samarasinghe as a suspect in the case given that investigations had unearthed that Mr. Samarasinghe had leased out the building belonging to the National Workers’ Institute to Mahinda Jayasinghe through a deed.

The magistrate deferred a ruling until July 25 and ordered that Mr. Samarasinghe’s statement be handed over to court for her to draft the order.

Mr. Gunaratne, PC, supported by lawyers Kisal Senanayake and Ishad Shabdeen, told court that Mr. Samarasinghe had joined up with a person named Siril Ananda to lease out the building belonging to the trade union, which is registered with the Department of Labour, despite the union having its own officials. He added that the first B reports submitted by police to court have clearly stated these facts.

The case will be taken up again on July 25.
