- Novel initiative to ease burden on patients
In a major move to ease the burden, both inconvenience and financial, on patients and their families, the Matale District General Hospital (DGH) has launched the ‘Day Case Surgery Programme’ this month.

Dr. Susantha Fernando
Selected patients will enter hospital on a particular day, undergo their surgical procedures and return home the same day, under this initiative, spearheaded by the Matale DGH’s Anaesthesia Department. Earlier, these patients would enter hospital, undergo their procedures the next day and get discharged the following day, spending two nights in hospital, which was very difficult for those from remote areas.
This DGH in the northernmost district of the Central Province has a large patient base, including from bustling towns such as Matale, Dambulla, Galewela and Rattota.
Appreciating the Day Case Surgery Programme, hospital Director Dr. Susantha Fernando pointed out that it not only reduces the waiting time for surgeries but also ensures a more patient-friendly and cost-effective approach. It is a significant step towards modernising surgical services in the region.

The process too has been streamlined and simplified—earlier, patients requiring many ENT (ear-nose-throat) and gynaecological surgeries had to spend at least two nights in hospital, having made multiple visits for pre-operative investigations.
While the Day Case Surgery Programme has been launched under the guidance of Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Roshana Mallawaarachchi, the streamlined pre-operative assessment protocols to ensure safety and suitability for same-day discharge have been mooted by Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Wasana Jayawardhane.

Dr. Prasadika Jayasekara
The initiative has begun with ENT surgeries performed by Consultant ENT Surgeon Dr. Prasadika Jayasekara and will be expanded to include gynaecological procedures by Consultant Obstetricians & Gynaecologists Dr. Kanishka Samaranayake and Dr. Vijith Gamage.
With the Matale DGH having four functioning operating theatre beds, the benefits to patients and the healthcare system will be: shorter hospital stay and faster recovery at home; reduced risk of hospital-acquired infections; fewer hospital visits for pre-operative testing; lower travel and accommodation costs for patients and families; increased surgical capacity without expanding physical infrastructure; and greater cost-effectiveness for the health sector.
This “timely and progressive” Day Case Surgery Programme aligns with the national goals of accessible, efficient and high-quality healthcare for all, it is understood.
