As the 327th birth anniversary of Weliwita Asarana Sarana Sri Saranankara Sangharaja Thera, considered the pioneer of the Buddhist revivalist movement in Sri Lanka, was marked on June 19 there are renewed calls to restore his birth home that is in a derelict state.
The venerable thera was born in a remote area of the Kandyan Kingdom at Tumpane, present day Galagedera electorate, in the house pictured here.
Born as Kulatunge Banda, he joined the Buddhist monkhood as a 12-year-old.

After the death of his parents the house went into disuse.
By law, the house of this monk, who was bestowed the title of Sangharaja by King Keerithi Sri Rajasinghe, is a property of the state as there has been no endowment to anyone following the death of his parents and his entry into monkhood.
A number of attempts have been made by residents to restore the house. but no government had shown any interest, they say.
Residents are calling on the present government to take up the issue as the Archaeology Department they say has failed to preserve a heritage building of national value.
