UN Human Rights Chief on a three day visit to SL
View(s):UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is to visit Jaffna, Trincomalee and Kandy during his three day official visit from June 23-26, sources said.
In Colombo, he is expected to call on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and selected Cabinet Ministers and civil society groups.
The high profile visit of top UN official came ahead of upcoming UNHRC sessions in September where Sri Lanka’s war time accountability and reconciliation related commitments are to be scrutinised as the country is placed on the agenda.
The visit by top UN Human Rights Chief comes after a decade since former UN Human Rights Chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein visited in February 2015.
Earlier, the government expressed its concerns over ‘OHCHR Sri Lanka accountability project’, a UN mechanism the UN Human Rights Office set up to ‘collect, consolidate, analyse and prepare information with regard to cross violation of human rights and international humanitarian law during wartime period’.
