Sri Lankans stand by India in their moment of grief

Sri Lanka joined the international community in mourning the victims of the Air India crash that claimed the lives of 241 people near Ahmedabad on Thursday.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in a message posted on X , conveyed Sri Lanka’s condolences to the Government and people of India.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171 near Ahmedabad today,” the President said. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of all those affected onboard.”

He also extended sympathies to those affected on the ground. “Equally heartbreaking are the civilian casualties on the ground, including young medical students whose lives and futures were struck by this tragedy,” he said.

“At this moment of deep sorrow, the people of Sri Lanka stand in solidarity with India. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted,” the message added.

Several Sri Lankans took to social media to express shock and grief over the tragedy, with many sharing messages, tributes, and images in honour of the victims. Some also posted AI-generated images and videos to convey support and sorrow.

Facebook user Chintha de Silva-Perera wrote: So very sad indeed, heartbreaking to watch this horrific air-crash. Our thoughts and prayers to our immediate neighbour India and families who are grieving right now.”

X user Abdul Samadh wrote: “The people of Sri Lanka are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the Air India flight crash. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, and we pray for the swift recovery of those injured. In this moment of profound grief, Sri Lanka stands with India.”

Instagram user former Sri Lankan cricketer Dhammika Prasad wrote: “Deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash that occurred yesterday in Ahmedabad, India. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives and to everyone affected by this devastating incident.”

In Maradana, a billboard carrying a message of condolence stated: “The United Peace Alliance and the People of Sri Lanka extend deepest condolences to all the families who lost their dear ones in the tragic aircraft crash at Ahmedabad.”

In response to the condolences, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said “High Commission of India expresses heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of solidarity and condolences following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad. It is deeply moving to see Sri Lanka stand with India in this time of grief.”

The flight, bound for Ahmedabad from London, crashed shortly before landing due to a suspected technical failure. Among the victims were Indian nationals, medical students, and residents in the area where the aircraft went down.
