UK visitors get a taste of paddy harvesting
View(s):By K R Rajamanthri
Two tourists from the United Kingdom recently took part in traditional paddy harvesting activities in Uva Paranagama, as part of a new rural tourism initiative launched by the “Ayubowan Uva Paranagama Cooperative Society.”
The programme, held in the Bomburu Ella area, aims to promote local tourism and strengthen the rural economy by showcasing ancestral farming methods. The UK visitors, Jabe and Blanca, were initially in the area to hike to Bomburu Ella waterfall but were invited by a local youth group to experience traditional paddy work.
Dressed in local attire, the tourists joined farmers in harvesting paddy, arranging sheaves for threshing, and using buffaloes to separate the grain. They also tasted a traditional meal (embula)offered by village women during field work.
The initiative is led by a group of local youth, including Uva Paranagama Pradeshiya Sabha member H M Asanka Bandara of the National People’s Power (NPP). Organisers say the goal is to encourage cultural exchange while creating alternative income sources for farmers and preserving fading traditions.
Plans are underway to expand the programme to include more visitors during the upcoming travel season.
