The 32nd Gratiaen Prize for the best work of creative writing in English by a Sri Lankan was awarded to Savin Edirisinghe for his collection of short stories—Kata Katha: Gossip, Rumours, and Idle Talk.

One of the youngest winners ever, Savin, 25, is from Imaduwa, Galle, and in a peppy acceptance speech thanked his parents for encouraging him to learn English. Educated at Sussex College and Mahinda College, Galle, Savin’s collection was commended for being witty, bold, and experimental, resting on the premise that “Kata Katha” or “gossip”, a form of oral knowledge system, “is the cornerstone of civilisation”.

A prize of Rs. 300,000 was awarded to Savin.

The accompanying prize awarded every other year, the H. A. I. Goonetilleke Prize for the translation of Sinhala or Tamil language creative writing into English went to Priyangwada Perera, who had translated Lamuthu Amaya by Surath de Mel into Wid Keirdo.

The Gratiaen Prize was established by Michael Ondaatje in 1992 with the prize money for his Booker winning novel The English Patient, and named after his mother Doris Gratiaen.
