Met warns of heavy winds today
View(s):The Meteorology Department has warned the fishing and naval vessels of strong winds today.
The warning came after gusty winds caused havoc in several areas, including Colombo, damaging houses, commercial buildings, vehicles and hoardings.
The Department’s Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre says the seas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasaththurai via Puttlam and Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota would be rough at times with strong winds up to 60 to 70 km/h today.
The department advised the naval and fishing communities not to venture to the very rough sea areas until further notice. According to the Disaster Management Centre, more than 7,239 persons in 14 districts have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions.
