Ten students arrested in connection with the ragging incident at the University of Sabaragamuwa which allegedly led to the suicide of a fellow student, have been further remanded until May 29. The suspects were produced before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court on May 16.
The deceased, Charith Dilshan, a 23-year-old second-year student from the Department of Engineering Technology, died by suicide on April 29. Initial findings indicated he had been severely distressed due to ragging.
A formal complaint was lodged with the Samanalawewa Police on May 1 by another student, alleging that Dilshan’s death was a result of ragging. Police subsequently recorded statements from 20 students who also claimed to have been subjected to ragging.
On May 3, the Acting Inspector General of Police ordered the transfer of the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a thorough and impartial investigation.
Six of the suspects were arrested on May 4 based on initial findings, while the remaining four surrendered to the Samanalawewa Police.
Sabaragamuwa University Vice Chancellor Prof. Sunil Shantha said investigations are ongoing as statements are still being collected. He added that no deadline has been set for the university’s internal inquiry report, but the team has been instructed to submit it “as soon as possible.”
