The Government under “Clean Sri Lanka” is planning to expand the availability of public sanitary facilities with the participation of the private sector.
Under the programme more than 2000 toilets would be made available to the public in main towns and other public places.
Senior Additional Secretary to the President as well as the head of the Clean Sri Lanka project, Russel Aponso, told the Sunday Times that as the initial step they would enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and private shed owners to set up sanitary facilities for the public.

They are planning to have this facility in some 1400 sheds by 2027. By the end of 2025 about 150 will be ready.
Apart from the sheds, the facility will be available in supermarkets and hotels.
A reasonable fee of a maximum of Rs 40 may be charged, however fuel customers can access the facility free of charge.
Mr. Aponso added that the President instructed to expand the availability of washrooms, taking account of how women and children as well as foreign tourists face inconveniences due to lack of washrooms.
He explained that another MOU would be signed with supermarkets and city hotels, so they too would provide washroom facilities for customers.
“The government would not charge a fee, yet the private sector would charge a maximum fee of Rs 40 for maintenance of the washrooms” he said.
Apart from that the Public Health Inspectors are instructed to regularly visit the washrooms and rate the hygienic condition and instruct the private sector institutes to take required actions.
