All nine university students involved in protest outside Health Ministry get bail
View(s):All nine university students including the Inter University student Federation (IUSF) convener Madushan Chandarajith who were arrested on Friday while protesting outside the Health Ministry were given bail without condition yesterday, police said.
They were produced in the Maligakanda Magistrate courts.
The protest was carried out by the Allied Health Science Graduates’ Union against the recruitment process for state services, particularly the introduction of an examinations instead of a merit-based recruitment system.
Mr. Chandrajith said they expected a change by the new government which advocated for a system change when they came to power, yet they too were like previous governments, using oppression as a response to student protests.
He claimed that they had demanded a discussion with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, but were unable to meet her due to her busy schedule.
“We condemn the oppression, and will continue our struggle until our demands are met”, he said.
The case is scheduled to be taken up on July 16 .
