Deshabandu faces 22 charges, will appear before inquiry committee tomorrow

Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon is to be served a chargesheet containing 22 charges when he appears tomorrow before the committee appointed to inquire into allegations of misconduct and gross abuse of power of his office.
Mr. Tennakoon has been summoned to appear before the committee at 2 pm tomorrow. The committee is to convene at Parliament’s Committee Room 8. Mr. Tennakoon is to be served the chargesheet, and the committee will thereafter give him time to respond in his defence.
The committee had been convening in Parliament over the past few weeks for its initial inquiry and will begin its investigation from tomorrow with the summoning of Mr. Tennakoon.
The committee, which was appointed under Section 5 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act No. 5 of 2002, is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and includes former Court of Appeal Judge Neil Iddawela and Chairman of the National Police Commission Lalith Ekanayake. Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Rajika Perera are assisting the committee.
