Veteran UNP politician Gamini Jayawickreme Perera passes away

Former Minister Gamini Jayawickreme Perera passed away yesterday morning at the age of 83.

The late Minister was a veteran politician of the United National Party (UNP) and its one-time chairman.

He was educated at Nalanda College.  

He entered politics in 1973 from the Katugampola electorate and elected to Parliament first at the 1977 General election. In 1978 Mr Perera held the Kurunegala District Ministry post.

After the introduction of the provincial council system, Mr Perera contested as the UNP’s Chief Ministerial candidate of the North Western Province.

He was reelected to parliament in 1994. During the 2001 UNP government period, Mr Perera was appointed as the Environment Minister.

During his political career, he also held ministerial portfolios such as Sustainable Development and Wildlife, Buddhasasana, Iirrigation and Water Resource Management. He also was the Minister of Food security.

The funeral arrangements will be notified later.
