The Excise Department has warned 11 liquor manufacturing companies that they either pay up their arrears amounting to Rs 4.5 billion or face legal action.

The majority of the arrears payments are due from last year.

Excise Commissioner General M.J. Gunasiri told the Sunday Times that the companies had been informed that, if required, a time period could be negotiated for the re-payment.

He said that in view of the delay in payments, the department had decided to collect the payments on a monthly basis.

Mr. Gunasiri said there were 25 registered liquor manufacturing companies, and there were issues only in about 11 of them.

Meanwhile, the Inland Revenue Commissioner General of Sepalika Chandrasekara said that about 15 liquor companies had defaulted on their taxes, too, and a team of officials was assigned to look into the issue. She said that the IRD would also be issuing warning letters to them to collect the dues.
