Customs prevents attempt to smuggle in imported garments worth Rs. 150 mn as fabric

Officials say country would have lost Rs. 60 mn in taxes if detection not made Customs has averted an attempt to smuggle in four container loads of readymade garments worth more than Rs. 150 million, imported from Malaysia and falsely claimed as fabric.

The officers discovered 33,000 to 44,000 pieces of ready-made clothing items in each cargo, totaling 160,000 pieces across all four containers. The consignees were identified as persons from Panadura, Wattala, and Maradana.

Customs officials said if the attempt had gone undetected, the country would have been deprived of tax amounting to Rs. 60 million.

State Finance Minister, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya inspected the seized material.

Customs RTF (Revenue Task Force) Director Nimal Samaratunga and Senior Deputy Director Nalin Premaratne are involved in the investigations into the incident.
