Dinuka Chandraratne to lead Old Nalandians’ Sports Club

Former basketball player Dinuka Chandraratne was elected President of Old Nalandians’ Sports Club (ONSC) at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held recently at the college premises. The ONSC, established in 1967, is the main Old Boys’ Association of Nalanda College to develop sports, sports fields and sportsmen of the college.

During the recent past, they were instrumented in developing sports infrastructure of the school where they refurbished semi-indoor basketball arena and built a boxing ring at the college. They also built a state-of-the-art Sports Strategy Development Centre which is the first of its kind in a school in Sri Lanka.

Former national cager Chandraratne was elected to lead ONSC at their 58th AGM to lead a young and energetic team and it was revealed that their next signature project will be the construction of a comprehensive gymnasium for the students of the college.

Over 70 members participated for the AGM where Principal of Nalanda College, Thilak Waththuhewa graced as the chief guest. The newly elected President, Chandraratne, presented the year plan under six main areas namely — developing and maintenance of sports fields, develop a sports policy and develop sports strategies, organise a fund raisers, organise the traditional Nalanda Dinner Dance at Maroons Nite, the Centennial Celebration programme and initiate a signature Nalanda Gymnasium project.

During the meeting donations were received to the ONSC’s main projects from Rajeev Hewage, Charith de Alwis and P.D. Chandraratne for Nalanda College Ground Maintenance Fund while Dulip Liyanage and Charith Kamaladasa contributed for Nalanda College Sports Strategy Development Programme. The batch of ‘91 Brothers’ also donated Rs.1 million worth boxing equipment to the school at the AGM.
