The University of Vavuniya has created a degree programme in Banking and Insurance as well as a degree programme in Small and Medium Enterprises which are set to be launched in July 2023.

According to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, Dr Mangaleswaran, the University will also launch a Higher National  Diploma in English in two years.

He added that a post-graduate course, namely an MBA, is also under approval at the UGC and is to be launched in October 2023.

The new curriculum is to generate high-end analytical and interpretive skills. Such skills are going to be generated by final exams and course work, where 70% of the assessment is to be exam-based and a further 30% generated by course work. He added that the assessments would involve a practical and group work, while also upgrading the students’ communication standard. Dr Mangaleswaran also explained that the teaching would be student centred, which the current teachers are adept at. There would also be no new buildings created for these new curricula.

As part of the new curriculum, Dr Mangaleswaran explained, lecturer and student exchanges are to take place with foreign universities. MoUs have been signed with one Indian and three Russian Universities. He added that the professors are selected on their qualifications, while also including industry experts. He said an Adjunct Officer is to be appointed where the stated officer can give either live or virtual lectures.

The new curricula would have tie ups with professional bodies such as SLIM and business organisations mainly from the IT sector. The Vice Chancellor added that that the new curricula would be of high standard and high quality in keeping with the University of Vavuniya brand.

The Vice Chancellor said that there were discussions with the stakeholders of the university, where the parents and teachers found the new curricula satisfactory as they thought that it would fit their context and allowed students to find careered employment. – PW
