IUSF not recognised by the UGC: Prof. Amaratunge
View(s):The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) has not been recognised as a student union by the University Grants Commission (UGC), UGC Chairman Sampath Amaratunge said recently.
“The IUSF has not received any legal endorsement by the UGC, nor has it been registered with the State university system. Therefore we have no say about its membership and cannot determine the age of members,” said Prof. Amaratunge.
This week President Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament that no university student had been arrested.
“IUSF Convener Wasantha Mudalige is not a university student. He has been in university for eight years. I graduated when I was 21. He is 31 and still in university. Students should be allowed only one extra year,” the President said.
The UGC Chairman told the Education Times that students could join university unions and student councils only during their academic period and repeaters were not permitted to join any university activities including sports.
“The general degree is four years, students are allowed to repeat their subjects and exams for an additional three years—a total of seven years in the university. During that period they are not given hostel facilities and cannot take part in any other academic and extracurricular activities either,” he said. -NF
