Education Minister Susil Premajayantha expects to recruit teachers for schools after they are trained for four years in a university of education, from next year onwards. This was announced by the Minister in Parliament this week.

The Minister said he will combine all teacher training colleges and create a teacher training programme of four years.

Despite the two methods of recruiting teachers according to the service minutes of the Sri Lanka Teachers Service, teachers were hired into rural schools after taking other diplomas into consideration as well. The Minister also cited examples of education systems in developed countries such as Singapore, Finland and Great Britain, which hire highly qualified individuals as teachers.

“We are backwards in education and we need to move higher. We need to introduce a transformation of education rather than educational reforms,” he said.
