Grade nine student wins first place at recent National Poetry Festival

Bhanuka Thirasara Kaluarachchi, a Grade 9 student at All Saints College in Galle, won first place in the senior category at the 2022 National Poetry Festival.  This cultural festival was held at the BMICH on November 17, and was presided by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. It was organised by the Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry and the Cultural Affairs Department. Bhanuka’s winning poem was titled “Freedom of thought will produce a great nation.” He is the son of reputed journalist Saman Kumara Kaluarachchi. His mother is a teacher. The school’s principal C.D. Nagahawatte said Bhanuka had an interest in the arts, especially in poetry and literature from his childhood onwards.
