Junior officers disgusted at public funds “wasted” during national crisis

An event to celebrate the 156th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police was held at the Police Grounds in Kandy yesterday under the patronage of Police Inspector General C.D. Wickramaratne.

Yesterday’s commemoration was held in addition to the main commemoration event held in Colombo recently under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Nearly 1000 Police officers serving in the Central Province, including all Officers-in-Charge were summoned to Kandy for yesterday’s event. Nine horses from the Police Mounted Division were transported from Colombo for the event, and Police bands and dancing troupes were also brought in to entertain those present.

Several junior officers openly voiced their disgust at the colossal amount of public funds spent to host an additional commemorative event at a time when the nation is facing a dire financial crisis. They also said even though the Police Department is quick to spend money for commemorative events, it spends next to nothing on the welfare of Police personnel.
