A poem to the Queen on her 70th anniversary as monarch

Queen Elizabeth II, whose funeral is tomorrow, was a patron of many good causes, and was well known for championing charitable causes.

It has been estimated that she helped to raise US$1.6 billion for more than 600 charities. Among those that benefited from her patronage were organisations like the Royal Opera House and military related groups like Blind Veterans UK, as well as others helping the elderly, children and even animals.

She hosted garden parties at Buckingham Palace every year to raise money for various organisations that help those in need.

She also had an impact on the world in many ways.

I admired her exemplary personality. At every Christmas, I sent her a greeting card with a few lines remembering the golden days of British rule in Ceylon.

She was humble enough to reply. I was hoping to write a book and present it to her.

This is what I wrote to her on her 70th anniversary as monarch:

A reign that never ceased, even for 70 years,

The Flag of king’s colours,

Lights the sky of this land,

The land that gave birth to,

many great literary works,

Like that of Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Charles Dickens,

Prospered in gold, milk and wine,

The land England by name,

Gave birth to her, Queen Elizabeth II,

Crowned at her tender age 25,

She sat on the throne divinely crafted,

She took the reign of the land of hope and glory…

Here, she still rides the horse Pride of the World.

Her legacy goes through four generations and every step she took will last in the hearts of every nation even in future generations.
