The Foreign Ministry has sought information from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Turkey over reports that Ukrainian forces had “rescued” seven Sri Lankan students who had been held by Russian forces since March.

A Foreign Ministry official said the ministry had earlier received reports that seven Sri Lankan students had gone missing since March, but said they had received no complaints from any of their parents or other relatives regarding the matter. The ministry has now sought  more information from its Ankara embassy, which is concurrently accredited to Ukraine, after reports claimed that the students were held prisoner by Russian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday that Ukranian forces, which had recently dislodged Russian forces from the region of Kharkiv, were continuing with their investigative actions and had rescued the Sri Lankan students who had been captured by Russian soldiers.

“In particular, seven citizens of the Republic of Sri Lanka, students of Kupyansk Medical College [were rescued]. Back in March, they had been captured by Russian soldiers and subsequently kept in a basement,” a Ukranian media report quoted him as saying.

“Only now, after the liberation of the Kharkiv region, were these people rescued. They are being provided with proper medical care,” President Zelenskyy assured.
