The United Kingdom’s new monarch, King Charles III, this week said he is a “committed Anglican Christian” and duty bound to Defend the Faith, but his role will involve ‘protecting the space for faith itself’. Charles is now the supreme governor of the Church of England.

As the new Head of the Commonwealth, of which Sri Lanka is a member, the King said he had a personal duty “to protect the diversity” of Britain in an address to 30 multi-religious leaders at a reception in Buckingham Palace on the eve of the state funeral of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II tomorrow.

Picture shows King Charles III, greeting Venerable Bogoda Seelawimala Thera, Head Monk of the London Buddhist Vihara and Chief Sangha Nayaka of Great Britain. The London Buddhist Vihara was established in 1926 by Anagarika Dharmapala at the height of colonial rule over Sri Lanka. The London Buddhist Vihara also held a memorial service for the late Queen last Tuesday. Please see ST2 Page 2
