Hundreds of city dwellers and foreign tourists witnessed the opening of what is considered the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia, the Lotus Tower on Thursday.

The 350-metre tower, which was built under an USD113 million credit facility from China, was finally declared open to both local and foreign tourists years after its completion. On the day of the opening, the newly set up Colombo Lotus Tower Pvt Ltd recorded a total revenue of Rs 2.1 million.

Ticket prices are fixed at Rs 500 and Rs 2,000, while foreign visitors are required to pay USD20 to access the building without a queue. A discounted ticket of Rs 200 is issued for children. The building can be accessed from 2 pm to 10 pm on weekdays, and 12 noon to 10 pm on weekends.

From the observation deck located on the 29th floor, visitors will have the opportunity of experiencing a bird’s eye view of the Colombo skyline and the revolving restaurant.

A Wimalasri, a resident from Matale, who came to witness the opening told the Sunday Times this structure would be a key landmark in Colombo in years to come, and he is hopeful that it will attract more foreign tourists.

Stressing that ticket prices are a bit high for locals considering the current economic crisis in the country, he urged that authorities will consider reducing the price in order to attract more local tourists from various parts of the country.

A Shanmugavel, a visiting Indian YouTuber/tourist in Colombo found out about the opening through social media and wanted to visit the site. “I haven’t seen anything like this tower, not even in India. Its magnificent design adds more colour to the city. I hope more Indian tourists will come to see this structure.”
