A project to provide students with opportunities to work part-time is being conducted by the University of Peradeniya, under the sponsorship of the university’s alumni.

The programme allows students from all nine faculties of the country’s only residential university to engage in jobs within the university itself. Through this programme, they can gain additional income that can help them cope with the economic crisis and provide them with job experience.

Career Guidance Director Prof. Dileep de Silva said the programme would be sponsored primarily by the Colombo branch of the university’s alumni association and the university itself.

While the students’ work is recorded in a log book, which would be provided on graduating from the university along with a certificate, around 170 jobs had been created for students, with the number to rise in future.

The jobs include supervisors, translators, web designers, HR assistants and animal feed designers, which would create friendships between various faculty students and benefit the university in the process as well.

Students would have to apply for the jobs online, and 109 students had already begun work by September 14, and the students would have to work 13 hours a month. The days and times they worked would be recorded in the log book by the supervising officer.

The programme was initially designed for 20 hours of work for each month but the time period was later reduced since this was the first round of student intake. However, the time period was expected to increase with each intake.

“I hope this will continue so all other universities will catch up as well,” said Prof. de Silva.-SJA
