Update related circulars to develop Schools’ Sports: AVK

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has directed officials to update Sports-related circulars issued to schools some 28 years ago, as an initiative to promote Sports in schools.
At a meeting last week with the Principals of Sports Colleges, the Education Minister directed that priority be given to the Development of Sports, for which Physical Training Gymnasiums in 18 schools will be upgraded and Rs 2.5 million worth of Sports equipment provided.

A Sports Committee, comprising of 3 Ministry officials and 4 Principals of Sports Colleges, will be appointed to assess increased allowances and incentives for Instructors and Coaches engaged in Sports activities. The Committee will study the methodology of Recruitment of new batches, and monitor adverts in the print media.

The 2017 Budget has allocated Rs 200 million for Development of Sports activities in schools, to mold a physically fit population within the school system, and the Minster briefed the officials to entertain additional, justifiable expenditure, as the case may be.

Commenting on Development, one Sports Principal observed that this is the first time in 20 yeas, a Minister had afforded an opportunity for a frank discussion between the Sports Principals and the Minister.
Sports Ministry Advisor, Sunil Jayaweera and Additional Secretary, Asoka Hewage, also participated at this meeting.
