South.Prov. reports 8 schoolchildren dead, 8 missing

Schools were damaged or destroyed and schoolchildren’s lives were lost in last week’s floods and landslides. Southern Provincial (SP) Council Deputy Director of Education, Ms Presanjalee Gamage said 8 students are reported dead in the SP and an equal number reported missing in the disaster.

The highest number of 6 student-deaths is in the Matara District. Three students belong to the Mulatiyana Education zone. They are from the Makandura MMV, Junior Model School and Vidya Nikethana Pirivena.
The missing 8 students are from the Deniyaya-Morawake Education Zone in the Matara District.

The other 2 student-deaths are from the Hambantota District, in the Walasmulla Education Zone. One student is from Weeraketya National School and the other is from Walasmulla MMV.
