Wesley College three-quarter Avishka Lee, in the same manner that mesmerises his opposition with his canny running, passed the rest of the line to clear the field in the second week of the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year and the School Team of the Year 2017competition.

Adding a mammoth tally 947 votes to his existing tally of 3 votes, Avishka moves to the top of the Most Popular Ruggerite of the Year competition by storm with a tally of 950 votes within two weeks.

Avishka’s progress pushes down the initial leader Yuzraan Lantra of Zahira College to second place. Yuzraan adds 63 to his count as his tally moves to 73, a mere six votes ahead of Sumudu Rankothge of Isipathana College. Sumudu received the similar count as Yuzraan during the ended week but with last week’s count his total reads as 67.

Royal College skipper Ovin Askey is at fourth with 28 votes ahead of team mate Rishmal Fernando, who has a count of 23. The overall list of competitors have reached 25 from 13 making the competition more interesting.

Avishka’s surge to the top helps his team Wesley College to take the lead in the Most Popular Rugby Team of the Year contest with 950 votes. Isipathana College follows at second with 88 votes, with Royal College (79) and Zahira College (74) trailing behind close to each other.

Unlike the start last week which looked quite dawdling, the composure of both competitions have changed drastically within a week, and it is surely to become more intense with 13 more weekends to go. The competitions, which enables readers to vote for their most preferred school Rugby player of the ongoing Singer Schools Division I Rugby League Championship 2017, will run until July 30.

Beginning from April 23, the Sunday Times, along with Wijeya Newspapers publications — Daily Mirror, Daily Lankadeepa and Ada — will publish coupons for 15 continuous weeks, numbered for each week from 1 to 15 with the deadline set on Thursdays of each week.
