Participating in the World Masters Games 2017 held in Auckland, New Zealand, from April 21 to 30, former Sri Lankan TT wizard Dr. Nimal Lucas, playing in the table tennis event, won one gold, two silver medals and one bronze medal, the highest tally of medals by a Sri Lankan table tennis player in a World Event.

In the Over 75 Team Event, Dr. Nimal Lucas, partnered by Robert Dunn (New Zealand), won a gold medal.

Dr. Lucas won a silver medal in the Over 75 Men’s Singles event. The Sri Lankan had to fight all the way to win the semi-finals as Australia’s Thong Tek Lee went down fighting to lose 2-3 (9/11, 11/6, 12/10, 2/11, 14/12). In the final he lost to Wes Willis (New Zealand) 3-2 11/6, 11/5, 6/11, 8/11, 13/11).

Partnered by Robert Dunn (New Zealand) in the Over 75 Men’s Doubles Event, Dr. Lucas, won a silver medal. In the semifinal of this event they beat Peter Snell (USA) and Wes Willis (New Zealand) 3-0 (11/0, 17/15, 11/6) but lost to Jurgen Kracht (Australia) and Thong Tek Lee (Australia) 3-0 (4/11, 9/11, 6/11).

In the Over 65 Mixed Doubles Event, Dr. Nimal Lucas combined with Sue Shirriffs (New Zealand) won a bronze medal. In the semi-final of this event they lost to Douglas Pattinson (New Zealand) and Tetyana Sulimova (New Zealand) 1-3 (5/11, 7/11, 11/6, 5/11). In the play-off for the bronze medal, they beat Bruce Penberthy (New Zealand) and Valerie Beaver (New Zealand) 3-2 (7/11, 11/8, 5/11, 11/3, 14/12).

Dr. Nimal Lucas captained the Ceylon National Table Tennis Team from 1966 to 1971. He played his first international match as a veteran table tennis player when he participated in the World Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Yokohama, Japan in June 2004. As a veteran table tennis player, up to date he has won 65 international medals. Currently he is the chairman of the Table Tennis Selection Committee.    - LR
