A female tuition teacher was ordered to be remanded for allegedly defrauding a parent of Rs 450,000, with the promise of admitting his son to a leading school in Kandy.

The suspect, Kularani Silva was ordered to be remanded till October 24 by Kegalle Magistrate Prasanna Alwis.

Court was informed that the suspect is alleged to have promised to admit the Grade 7 student to Dharamarajah College, Kandy, and accepted the cash from the victim at a location in Kandy Town, at the beginning of this month.

The woman was arrested following a complaint made to the Kegalle Police by the student’s father. (LB)

A hunt is on for the person/persons behind a scam where junior employees at Peradeniya University have been cheated of Rs 3.1 million.
According to police, a letter containing the seal of the Presidential Secretariat had informed the university employees that they were eligible to a grant of a three-wheeler, provided they deposit Rs 25,000 each to a particular bank account number.

The unsuspecting victims had rushed to the offer and made the deposits as suggested in the letter, but later found the letter was a fake, and had been faxed to the university authorities from a location in Kandy.

The bogus document was detected by a senior university employee who in turned informed the bank of the scam, thereby preventing others from falling victim, police added.

Police added that they were working on several clues and were optimistic of an early breakthrough. (LB)
