Heads of some Sri Lanka diplomatic missions overseas or their deputies turned up in Colombo yesterday for a conference but found there was no such event.
Invitations were sent out by the External Affairs Ministry for the event. They were made to believe that President Mahinda Rajapaksa would address them.
Among those who arrived in Colombo were Admiral (retd.) Wasantha Karannagoda – Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Japan, Air Chief Marshal (retd.) Jayalath Weerakkody – High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Lakshman Hulugalle – Deputy High Commissioner to Australia.

The mix up costing thousands of dollars had been from the Ministry of External Affairs. It was only Sri Lanka’s envoy in Abu Dhabi, Mahinda Balasuriya, a retired Inspector General of Police, was directed to report to Colombo yesterday.
