Two motor cyclists die in road mishaps

Two motorcyclists were killed in two different traffic accidents on Wednesday (15), a coroner’s court was told.

Father of one Amila PiyanSka Padmalal, 32, a boiler operator attached to a factory in the Biyagama Free Trade Zone and a resident of Dewalagama, Dompe was on his way home when his motorcycle collided with a container tractor in Radawana area in Dompe on Wednesday evening. The accident proved fatal.

Following the collision Mr. Padmalal was rushed to the Ragama Teaching Hospital and later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) due to complications. He died after admission to the CNH.

Giving evidence at the inquest container driver Wijesekara Mudiyanselage Jayantha, 32, a resident of Develpola said he was attempting to turn his vehicle near his factory when the speeding motor cycle collided with the vehicles’ rear.

“The motorcyclists face was seriously injured. He was bleeding heavily. We rushed him to the Ragama hospital,” he added.
Sudden Deaths Inquirer M. Ashrof Rumi concluded that the motorcyclist died of severe injuries caused to his brain and organs when his motorcycle collided with the container truck.

In a separate incident a 60-year-old motorcyclist died after admission to the ICU of the CNH on Wednesday following a head-on collision with another motor cycle at the Dugonna Junction.

The dead man identified as J. A. Henry Appuhamy, a resident of Baduwatte, Katunayake had attempted to overtake a tree-wheeler leading to the accident.

“I was riding my motorcycle last Tuesday with my mother seated on the pillion. We were going to Dugonna area from Katunayake. The victim who was travelling in the opposite lane tried to overtake a three-wheeler when our motorcycles collided. My mother was thrown off the cycle,” said Jude Samantha, a driver attached to a private firm in the Biyagama Free Trade Zone.

He added that his mother and Mr. Appuhamy were rushed to the hospital in two different vehicles. Mr. Appuhamy succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

CNH JMO Dr. A. Wasanthahewa, who conducted the post mortem, said that death was caused by damage to the skull and excessive bleeding from the nose.

The body was buried at the Baduwatte general cemetery last Thursday.
