The Ceylon Electricity Board, though refusing to reduce the huge fuel adjustment surcharge is to connect up with phone companies to make it easier for consumers to make payments. CEB Chairman W.B. Ganegala said they were holding talks whereby the people would be able to pay their bills at the nearest reload shop.

He said that by the end of this year, the CEB hoped to provide electricity to about 98 per cent of the people – which he claimed would be the highest in Asia. The CEB chairman reiterated that unless more rain came and the hydroelectric power generation could be increased from the present 12 per cent to about 60 per cent, the CEB could not reduce or withdraw the surcharge as promised by President Mahinda Rajapaksa last year.
