Little action against big menace on roads

Private bus drivers are one of the main traffic offenders in Colombo city and its suburbs, but police appear to be unable to rein them in.
Private buses blocking the flow of traffic in main towns and busy roads are a common sight with little or no action being taken against the drivers.
Despite instructions from the police that buses and heavy vehicles should travel on the left lane, in many occasions these buses travel on the right hand side obstructing smaller vehicles.

“I have seen buses travelling along the High Level road trying to overtake each other paying little heed to pedestrians and other motorists. They are only concerned about overtaking the other bus,” Priyangani Ratnayaka, a private company employee said.”When the bus approaches the Fort area it is worse as they are only concerned about overtaking other buses and being the first at the main bus stand, so that they can be the first on the return journey,” she added.

Some of these pictures captured in the Mount Lavinia, Ratmalana, Nugegoda, Dehiwala and Colombo give a glimpse of the unruly driving of private buses.
One of the pictures show even a traffic policeman finding it difficult to proceed as a private bus which rightly should be travelling on the leftside of the road travels on the right hand side obstructing his way.
