The Northern Provincial Council this week passed a resolution not to allow any companies or individuals to mine or quarry limestone in the province, Agriculture and Environment Minister P. Ingaranesan said.

A meeting headed by the Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Susil Premajayantha and District Secretary of Kilinochchi Rupawathi Ketheeswaran will be held tomorrow at Kilinochchi Secretariat office, where officials will discuss exploration work in Pooneryn.

Meanwhile, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) Assistant Director, Udara de Silva said that an exploration licence had been issued to a cement manufacturing company to conduct exploration work, in order to check the availability of limestone resources. He said that a licence was not issued to a cement manufacturing company to quarry limestone, and that the GSMB did not carry out any preliminary tests for limestone deposits in the area.
