Municipal councillor allegedly beats wife, assaults mediation board members

Kotte Municipal Councillor Dhanushka Vishwajith will appear before the Nugegoda Magistrate on Friday on charges of assaulting his wife and three members of a mediation board.  The suspect, an active member of the UPFA, had attacked his wife at her place of work despite a restraining order against his contacting her and was charged before the Nugegoda Magistrate. 

The Magistrate referred the case to a mediation board. On 15 March the mediation board summoned the politico and his wife to appear before them at a meeting to be held at Sri Jayawardenepura Girls’ School. During the sessions the municipal councillor had once again attacked his wife as well as members of the mediation board who had been instructed to bring rapprochement between husband and wife.During the fracas an official had called the police hotline 119 seeking assistance to bring the situation under control.

Police who arrived on the scene arrested the unruly municipal councilor and produced him before the Nugegoda Magistrate who remanded him until 28 March.
OIC of the Children and Women’s Bureau WIP Chandima Sapugoda under instructions of the HQI Mirihana CI Roshan Rajapakshe is investigating into the incident.
