Sri Lanka’s oldest President’s Counsel, (P.C.) J.W. (Will) Subasinghe passed away yesterday. He was 96. Mr. Subasinghe was one-time Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and Registrar of the Supreme Court. He had a wide civil practice and was a close counsel of President J.R. Jayewardene throughout President Jayewardene’s long political career from the 1940s to 1989.

He served as Chairman of the Sri Lanka Press Council from 1977-89. Mr. Subasinghe schooled at Royal College, Colombo and was a member of its first eleven cricket team which toured Australia in the 1930s, one of the first schoolboy teams to tour abroad. Later, he was an active senior member of the Royal College Union. His remains lie at his daughter’s residence at No. 8/3, Ragama Road, Kadawata.

Cremation will take place today (Sunday) at 5 p.m. at the General Cemetery Kanatte, Colombo.
